My paintings and prints often depict gatherings of people in urban settings –- in cafes, at bus stops, on the street –- and cast the figures in a theatrical light as players on a stage. I try to make art that lets the world in, in all its complexity, and that reflects both the ordinary and the extraordinary.
I am interested in creating non-literary and open-ended narratives that resonate for our times. My paintings often explore the tension between having knowledge of, but also insulation from, certain world events. For example, Tango, envisions an urban scene in which the upheaval of far-off wars is present, but does not disturb the activities of the café-goers. In Harbinger, the ecological disaster at sea intrudes only marginally on the reverie of the two reclining figures in the foreground.
After studying art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I received my M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of Arizona in Tucson. My exhibitions include one-person shows at Bromfield gallery, Willoughby & Baltic Fine Arts, the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, and elsewhere. I have been awarded a 2013 fellowship in visual arts from the Somerville Arts Council. |
