The Sewing Cooperative is a program of Haiti Projects, Inc., a non-profit, charitable corporation in Massachusetts. We operate in Fonds des Blancs, Haiti, a poor, mountainous area west of Port au Prince. Our mission is to fight poverty by creating the means through which people can help themselves.
The Sewing Cooperative started in 1996 to provide women with work to earn a living. Today eighty women are employed at the cooperative, using their embroidery skills to produce heirloom-quality items of great beauty.
We in Fond des Blancs are fortunate not to have incurred loss of life in the recent earthquake. Many families however have suffered greatly and some of their relatives have been injured or lost in Port au Prince. It will take time and effort to heal and to rebuild. |
