SOS Last Wednesdays
SOS Last Wednesdays was a series of informal get-togethers by and for local artists. We met on the last Wednesday evening of each month during 2016 and early 2017.
March 29, 2017, 6:30-8:30 pm: Home Studio Workshop
Sarah Carlson will be providing us with helpful tips on managing and organizing your Home Studio for SOS, along with guiding us on how to interact with the public in your home studio. For those artists who are going to welcome the public into their home this May, it is good to know how to engage with visitors, answer questions about your work, maybe make a sale, and end the interaction successfully. Sometimes there is apprehension about letting strangers into your home, and it is good to have a few techniques for being a host on SOS weekend.
February 22, 2017, 6:30 pm: Flower Painting
Tired of the winter grays? Come out and paint a colorful flower! Painter Adam Adkison will be leading us through instruction on painting a small flower to brighten your days. Bring your own materials and tools for this skills-share workshop. We will be meeting at the common space at Mad Oyster Studios, 2 Bradley Street, at 6:30. Flowers will be provided. For a list of what to bring and to let us know you're coming, please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
November 30, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm: Seasonal Potluck
Seasonal artist potluck! Come snug into our apartment in a quintessential Somerville triple-decker (small but cozy!) and celebrate the season of feasting with us. Photographer Jeremy Heflin and Mixed Media Artist Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer will host a potluck for Somerville SOS Last Wednesday participants. Bring your favorite artist's favorite dish or make a dish in the art style of your favorite artist -- GET CREATIVE!!
Please RSVP to Johanna at email@example.com so we can save you a seat at the table!

October 26, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm: Big Prints with Gary Duehr
Meet Vernon Street Photographer Gary Duehr and learn how to make BIG PRINTS of your own. Gary's work has been featured in museums and galleries in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and internationally. You can see some of his public art pieces right here in Somerville. Gary will show us the mysteries of prepping electronic files for printing, enlarging an image, and using photoshop to make corrections. Then, at no charge, he will print a few of your images, up to 24"x36", on his large format Epson 9890 printer in studio. Just bring a jpeg on a thumbdrive.
The first three people to confirm they are attending at firstname.lastname@example.org will get one free print of their work!

September 28, 2016, 7-8:30 pm: Behind the Mask with Eric Bornstein
Come meet local mask maker Eric Bornstein and his company, Behind the Mask Studio. These Somerville artists specialize in mask theater, arts education, custom made masks and costumes. They have worked with a wide variety of artists, performance groups, and institutions, including the Boston Ballet, Windsor School, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Eric will give us a tour of his space and talk with us about his creative work and business. This is a rare chance to see inside this mask-making studio (and perhaps get inspired for Halloween!)

August 31, 2016: Encaustic Demonstration
Suzanne Lubeck invites us to meet in her studio to watch a demonstration of encaustic techniques. Using wax, paint, and collage elements, Suzanne creates fascinating art pieces using this method. This demonstration will take place at Vernon Street Studios, 6 Vernon Street, Studio #25 (second floor), at 6:30.
July 27, 2016: Sumi Ink Group Art Project
This idea is borrowed from a couple groups in other communities that have a club which meets regularly. The idea is to use a brush and ink and everyone works on a single strip of paper to create a cohesive piece. See a video on this at sumiinkclub.com. This meeting, led by Jason Jong, will be at Mad Oyster Studios, 2 Bradley Street, beginning at 6:30.
June 29, 2016: Make Your Own Sketchbook (or album)
Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer will bring the materials and will guide you through the steps of making a hand sewn book that you can use for sketching, writing, or photographs (see photo above for example). Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org so we can prepare enough material. You will also find out what simple tools you need to bring. (We're asking $5/person for materials.) This 2 hour workshop will take place in the common space of Mad Oyster Studios, 2 Bradley Street, beginning at 6:30.
