Shortly after I graduated from college in 1970 I ended up living with a strange and wonderful group of people in Boulder, Colorado. One morning one of the guys (the guy with the hat) set up a camera with a timer and a tripod so he could get a group picture. He got it blown up to poster size and gave us each a poster of it for Christmas. That poster is now hanging in my entryway, and I have returned to it for inspiration various times over the years. Most of my recent prints are based on that poster. An additional reference which has been on my mind as I've been working on these: some time back PBS ran a documentary called "The Movement and 'the Madman'" about the peace movement in the fall of 1969 and the effect that it had on Nixon's plans and how it probably saved many thousands of lives. I was there at the massive march on Washington that year. I particularly remember how amazing it was to see the National Mall completely filled with people. I had been in many peace demonstrations before, but this was the first time I had a real sense of how many of us there were. After seeing that documentary I began to think about how the prints I was doing, with so many faces crammed together, reminded me of that vision of the Mall, so now both of those feelings are present in my work.
